Oh, christ... what did I do to offend her this time? The inside of my head doesn't provide any answers, so I shrug, picking up the bags and following her out. "So what in the hell did I say wrong this time?" I ask, surprising myself.

Shell sighs, turning around and sending her curls flying over her shoulders revealing an angry expression etched on her face. "Nothing Fitzy. Just the fact that... nothing. Forget it." she mutters before turning around again and walking again down the sidewalk with James almost running to keep up.

"Thank you. That was very, very clear and I will certainly forget it," I mutter at the sky, then wince due to the sun and walk after her. "You're making less sense by the minute, by the way."

'I know it was very crystal clear. Glad you understand." she calls back behind her just glaring a bit as she kept walking, letting go of James' hand and wrapping her arms around Melody almost in a protective way. "I'm not talking about what I want to say yet. You'll just stare at me like I'm an alien and then clam up and not speak to me."

"Know me that well, do you?" I ask, raising my eyebrows at her at her again. It does sound like something I might do... at least once upon a time, and possibly still now. What she expects might trigger such a reaction, however, I really don't know. "Is your mother always this strange?" I ask James.

"She's a bit odd, but she's my momma still." he says with a shrug and a half smile before looking up at Fitzy. "Mum says I'm not allowed to walk on a sidewalk without holding someone's hand... can you?" James asks softly watching Shell walking down the street still with Melody in her arms.

"Ah...." This is a little weird, and I stare at the kid a minute, then shrug and hold out my hand. "Sure...." I say cautiously, eying him and willing myself not to cringe. I don't know if I've ever held someone's hand. "Your mother is overprotective, by the way. At least in my opinion."

James stares back at him for a moment giving Fitzy a weaker half smile before taking his hand lightly and walking slowly as his tennis shoes scuff against the pavement. "What's overprotective? I know she worries about all of us all the time if that's what it is... I think I know why she's upset with you." he says in a matter of fact tone.

"Pretty much that," I agree, shrugging. "Worrying too much... and oh?" I raise my eyebrows again. "So why is that?"

"It's not obvious to you? That's why. I think she like likes you cause of that kiss thing... I said she was werid." he says letting out a sigh before smiling a bit as the wind played with his short red hair.

I frown very slightly at the kid, unraveling that. "Right...." I say after a moment. You're four. Why did I ask you? "Well, he's weird like that," I shrug.

James nods lightly before walking a little more in silence. "Do you not like my momma? Cause when da was here he said that the best thing was mum's kisses and you didn't want one." he asks looking back up at him after a minute or two.

"Sure," I shrug, raising my eyebrows at the kid. "I like her well enough, just not... in that way." I shrug again slightly, the topic making me twitchy. "So what happened to your dad?"

James shrugs and keeps walking, making sure not to tell Shell later. "Momma won't tell us but he died last year..." he says softly looking to the sidewalk.

I frown slightly again, glancing forward to where Shell is. I wonder very briefly how she'd ever know if I let her kid walk beside me without holding his hand, but then shake my head. "What do you mean, she won't tell you?"

"She won't tell me what happened to him. I think she's told the others though." he shrugs before glancing up at the stairs. "Thanks for holding my hand." James says with a light smile before making his way up the steps.

"Sure," I shrug, glancing at the kid, pausing and shrugging. "You're four. Maybe she'll tell you when you're older."

He shrugs and watches his mum hold Melody close to her before letting out a sigh. "So, do you have the things to cook at least?" she asks raising an eyebrow at him.

"As far as I know," I shrug slightly, tugging my hand out of James's now that we're back at my place and I need to unlock the door anyway. "They might not be the right ones, but I have a menagerie of cooking utensils someplace."

Shell simply nods before looking at the door. James on the other hand was bouncing around on his heels as he took Shell's hand into his own.

I nod in return, a little unnerved by the lack of reply because it somehow feels awkward. "So... coming back in?" I ask unnecessarily as I open the door and step inside.

Shell just nods again and walks into the kitchen with James laughing a little to himself. "She's realllly mad at you. Have fun with that." he says before settling back onto the couch as if to avoid the kitchen purposely.

"Oh, I will," I mutter, shaking my head over how ridiculous it is that she is mad, then heading into the kitchen to set the bags on the counter. "Here, I can take her," I nod at Melody, wondering almost with amusement whether Shell will actually reply.

"No, it's fine. Just tell me where to put her and I'll do it." she says softly but slightly bitter and distant as well. She sighs turning around slightly to look up at him waiting for him to reply again.

I half-suppress a sigh, nodding at Melody's highchair. "Over there. Then she can stare at the ceiling some more." I try not to think about the fact that I'm almost tempted to argue and insist that I'll do it. What for? Just so I can hold her a few seconds? I dismiss that thought quickly, shaking my head again.

"Okay then." she says walking over to the high chair and placing Melody into it gently making sure she was okay once she was settled. "So are you cooking or am I or are we both going to spilt the work."

"Both, I guess... if I can figure out what I'm supposed to be doing." I shrug slightly. It can't be too complicated, I suppose.

Shell nods looking around at the few cabinets. "Well we need a bigger sized cooking pot to start with. Do you have one of those?"

"Ah..." I look slowly around the room, then shrug. "Maybe in the lower cabinet?"

Shell shrugs lightly before almost sitting on the ground and pulling the cabinet doors open. "Here, take this and this." she says handing him a strainer as well. Getting back to her feet she looks at him with a frown. "Just fill the pot half way and then put it on the stovetop. Then turn on the burner to about four or five and that's that for now."
