"No, that's fine," I say, frowning slightly as I glance over at her, wondering why she seems almost to be apologizing. "Really... kind of a lot nicer for her if she doesn't get a lot of family traits. Bunch of excessively quiet, introverted people-haters...." Other than Lilith or Mer, I amend. And Trisha more avoided people than hated them....

She nods lightly, glancing over to Melody for a second. "So maybe she needs a more of a 'social butterfly' in her life or something?" she says with a faint laugh before looking up at the signs of the stores. "Almost there?"

"Maybe," I shrug, raising my eyebrows at her in a bemused sort of half-amusement. "Why? Are you following to rescue her from my awful parenting or just making the comment?" I glance up and down the street as well after I've spoken, nodding to a store about a block ahead across the street.

"Maybe." she shrugs, mocking his expression in a teasing manner. "Or maybe I could just help you and her with the whole father daughter bond." she says nodding a little at the store as they continued walking.

"That's something you can be helped with?" I mutter, glancing down at Melody. "What, are there lessons or something?"

"Well I could help you two bond and there are actually classes you can take were you can bond as well. I did them with the kids when they were babies. When she's older you could have like a game night or plan a day just for the two of you to go to the zoo or something you both like to do." she says with a light smile.

I try not to let on exactly how discomfiting that sounds, eventually shrugging. "Might just have to get used to the idea of calling her... her name, and things like that, first." I still can't bring myself to really quite say the word 'daughter.' "I don't imagine you ever had that sort of problem," I add, raising an eyebrow.

"Not really... to be honest I just wanted three." she whispers to him making sure James didn't hear. "Two boys and a girl." Shell adds before letting out a deep sigh. "I think we're at the store. Wanna put Melody in the cart?"

I raise my eyebrows again very slightly at that information, wondering if it might help explain her touchiness anytime I commented on the size of her family. "Certainly does look like we're at the store," I agree a bit dryly, and nod. Melody blinks as I set her in the cart, apparently startled by the change, but very slowly smiles after a moment as I guess she finds it to her liking. "Strange child," I mutter, shaking my head, then nod over at James. "Does he ever speak, by the way?"

Yes he does, just when he's comfortable enough to talk to you." she says softly before looking down at James, seeing that he was frowning at Fitzy slightly.

"Hm...." I glance sideways at James, then shrug. "Not that I'm complaining about getting less attention from your kids," I mutter, still remembering vividly when Jenny had a crush on me, way back when. "How are they all, anyway?"

"They're all fine. Zoe had a baby a while ago..." she says with a sigh but doesn't say anything else on the matter. "But she left home and Jenny's thinking of moving out soon I think."

"She had a baby?" I raise my eyebrows again. All I really remember of her kids is that there were a lot and they were small, so I'm not sure how shocking this news should be. "And Jenny must at least be graduated by now, right?"
|
|
|
Post by Shelby Crescent on Sept 13, 2008 4:44:52 GMT
"Yes, Jenny did graduate this year and yes a baby. A little girl named Kalin. She's so adorable, but she wants to live on her own." she says softly afterwards before setting James in the cart as well as Shell was pushing it. "Where's the pasta anyway in this store?" she asks looking up at the aisle signs.

"Your guess is as good as mine," I shrug, feeling remarkably useless. "And you're not really liking the idea of your kids growing up, are you?" I ask, just taking a stab at it.

"Not at all. As soon as they leave I'm alone in that huge house." she says with a frown before looking finally at the correct aisle. "I wish they didn't have to grow up. I think that's why I want one more..." she adds softly before looking down at Melody with a smile now gracing her lips.

"Not as though they're all about to leave at once," I point out, nodding at James... and then following her glance to Melody. I raise my eyebrows again, half-smiling faintly. "Go ahead and take her, if you like." I laugh slightly, not really amused and not sure if I'm joking or not.

"I know, I know. But it's sooner than you think. I just can't stand knowing that all of them will be grown up and married with their own children as I'm alone is all." she says with a shrug, but slowly pushes the cart and she smiled down at Melody again. "No, she deserves to be with her father, even if you don't want her." she adds softly as well looking up at Fitzy with a frown before giving a box of spaghetti to James.

"Well, then you can steal your grandkids," I shrug, then half-shudder. "As if that doesn't make you sound old...." I pause briefly. "Rather twisted logic, by the way. What kind of child deserves to be with someone who barely even cares? What kind of person, for that matter, child or not? You can't honestly be one of those any-biological-family-is-better-than-none people, are you?"

Shell stops slightly but shakes her head and continues walking with the cart. "I would have to say so. Three of my children don't even have their biological parents alive Fitzy. Only one of them has both their mother and father. I've been looking after Cassy Meadowes twin daughters and Jay's daughter from his first marriage for years. I'm sure they would have loved to meet their mothers. I think Melody would want to know and be with you." she says seriously before placing a jar of pasta sauce into the cart along with a loaf of italian bread.

I laugh very slightly, shaking my head. "And there we have an example of rather faulty logic. I'm assuming that those kids' parents are actually worth meeting. But then you take someone like my sister Lilith - and if you try to tell me she would've been better off knowing our biological father rather than just our aunt's boyfriend... I think I might have you committed." My tone is pretty mild, I think - I'm not being harsh or argumentative for once, but still perfectly serious about this. I shake my head slightly, managing to find a bit of paper in my pocket I can fiddle with. "She'd be better off with someone else. She'd be better off with her mother, crackwhore or not."

Shell just sighs, keeping a serious face on as she continued pushing the cart through the aisles. She was listening to what he was saying just she heard this speech before from her father when she actually sat down and got to know him a few years back. Same went when Jenny wanted to talk to Logan and Shell wouldn't let her explaining almost the same thing as Fitzy just told her.
"So if you could you would just drop her off on someone that would willingly take her and was a better person than yourself which it seems by your perception of yourself that almost everyone would be a better parent for Melody. If you really think that's true I'll take her and you can visit if she's that much of a bother Fitzy." she says shooting him a slight glare and in a somewhat of a harsh tone as she strolled over to one of the check outs.

"Well, that's about the size of it, yes," I nod, glancing briefly at Melody. "I'm just being logical here, and you're not making sense. Sometimes it's much better for kids to have decent parents than real ones." So, by rights, that possibly serious offer should be a lot more tempting than it is.

Shell sighs and rolls her eyes as James was handing her the things in the cart as she placed them onto the check out counter. "When did I ever make sense?" she says raising an eyebrow slightly before pushing the cart up to the cashier and handing her some money.

"Honestly?" I ask, raising my eyebrows - then getting sidetracked as I realize we're at the checkout counter. I've barely even noticed being in a store, weirdly enough. "I'll pay for that, by the way, since you've offered to cook it... only right," I point out, taking out my wallet. "And, to answer your question - I thought that you used to, but maybe I remembered wrong... got you mixed up with someone else. But I've always remembered you as one of the more intelligent people I know." From me, that's saying something, as I tend to think of myself as significantly smarter than everyone else. It's not very often that I call someone intelligent.

Shell sighs, taking back her money from the cashier so Fitzy could pay. Looking over at him she sighs, just shrugging about what he said about her being intelligent. "Was that a compliment or just your opinion?"
|
|
|
Post by Fitzy Patricks on Sept 17, 2008 2:15:11 GMT
"Both?" I shrug, half-smiling for some reason as I take my change back from the cashier. "It was a... positive opinion, so I guess that's sort of like a compliment, isn't it?"
|
|
|
Post by Shelby Crescent on Sept 17, 2008 2:26:16 GMT
Shell smiles faintly before tilting her head to the side. "Then thank you. Yes I would say a positive opinion is actually a compliement. I would kiss your check but I don't think you'll appreciate it." she says with a broader smile to him before putting the groceries back into the cart with James still sitting there as well.

I pause very briefly, taken aback, then tilt my head. "And there you go again... an incredibly intelligent conclusion," I say dryly, then frown. "You know we can't exactly steal the cart.... You want to take Melody and I can carry the food?"
|
|
|

Shell's smile falls and disappears picking up James out of the cart and looks up at Shell almost expecting her to carry him but instead she reached down and picked up Melody and placed her on her right hip. He sighs softly but Shell takes ahold of his right hand into her left. "Okay then." she nods over to Fitzy and walks out of the grocery store.
