Shell laughs a little before picking at a few more pieces from her bowl. "So could you ever imagine actually having a pet dragon or any of the rest you mentioned? Sure to scare away your hated muggle neighbors." she says sarcastically again.

I feel just a little bit affronted at that, not sure how serious she might be. I still can't really tolerate any accusations of Dark leanings of bigotry, joking or not. "My 'hated' muggle neighbors?" I repeat, then shake my head. "Well, I have had snakes and spiders... and I'd kind of like a dragon."

"I was teasing Arden. Usually I'm really sarcastic when I joke around... sorry." she says quickly after falling a bit quiet and nodding only when she said she wanted a dragon. "You'd probably need a spell for invisibility a few more if you did get one and lived in the muggle world. You do live there right?"

"For the moment," I nod. "And I think I'd need a few more spells than that, really. Flame-freezing charms and the like. But it's really just a dream, not something I'm actually planning on. And sorry in return; I'm just a little touchy about things like that."

She nods lightly noticing her fruit salad was gone when her fingers danced around the empty bowl in search of more pieces. "It's okay. I should watch my humor I guess." she shrugs before getting up and heading back to the fridge this time grabbing a slice of banana cream pie. "So um. I took the kids to a muggle soccer game. They were completely baffled by the rules comparing it to quidditch." she says with a laugh mostly to herself.

I laugh slightly, shaking my head. "It's actually fairly similar to Quidditch, isn't it?" I ask. "I mean, same basic objective anyway. I played once, at my uncle's family reunion, and it made sense to me."

"Isaiah was asking things like, do they have a golden snitch and why can't they have bats? I just think they were expecting it to be exactly similiar to quidditch is all. They got it eventually though." she says with a smile.

"Ah, I see," I nod. "Though it doesn't make much sense that they'd be that alike."

Shell shrugs a bit. "I don't know. As much as I'm in tune with the muggle world the kids aren't. They just don't like it as much. You should have seen me teaching them how to drive." she says letting out a deep sigh.

"Not fun?" I guess, laughing slightly. "Never gotten the hang of it myself."

"Well seeing as Isaiah ran into a tree, Zoe hit the garage, and Ashlyn nearly ran Jay over. Jenny's the other one that has even passed her test." she says with a smile.

I laugh and shake my head again, grinning. "I was too terrified to try and turn it on at first, then got startled once I did and drove across a field into some old chicken coop. So... they have my empathy."

"Oh wow." Shell says covering her mouth to keep herself from laughing hysterically. "I learned when I was sixteen. Sorta taught myself. Nick helped me some." she says with a nod before smiling at the thought. "Jenny just got hers at eighteen. I think in the muggle world you start learning when you're fifteen."

"Or earlier," I mutter, thinking of Lilith being allowed to take my place after that disastrous start to the lesson. "But I was seventeen. Terrified of muggle technology at the time, of course, because I'd never been around it. But teaching yourself is impressive."

"I think it was the muggle side of me." she says with a smile. "I'm out to teach Andra, Briar and Riyann one day. You can join us." Shell grins at her. "Or do you have your license?"
|

Post by Arden Patricks on Aug 19, 2008 4:06:58 GMT
"No, I have my license now." I shake my head. "Just prefer to walk and use public transportation... or apparate, hoping that nobody notices. Cars still freak me out a little." I smile slightly. "Even for a muggle, I think teaching oneself to drive is pretty impressive."

"I understand. I love my car. I honestly get so worried when Briar drives it. Got us arrested once for going almost a little over a hundred..." she says shaking her head at the thought. "But thank you Arden." Shell smiles faintly at her.

I shrug off the thanks, shaking my head an smiling slightly. "Not just arrested, but probably very nearly killed...."

"That's definately true. We actually got away but when the cops sent out a call saying that we needed to be caught, Jenny pointed us out to a cop after we picked her up from Logan at a cafe. She was such a brat then." she says with a laugh.

I smile slightly again, shaking my head. "So she isn't any more?" I ask before I can help it. Of course I don't know her kids very well, but i am pretty sure that I know which one is Jenny, and she's always struck me as rude.

"Actually she's more sarcastic and cunning. But she's way nicer, kinder and helpful since well Jay has passed to be honest. Not complaining about having to babysit once in a while or anything anymore. It's really nice." she says with a nod.

"They're still upset about it though... Jay's passing. He was more of a father figure than anyone to be honest." she says softly, biting her lip before smiling faintly. "But I'm glad they had one at least is the thing that's important."

"Sorry. Just a thought I was having. I still wear his pocketwatch as a necklace." she says picking the silver object from her ribcage where it hung and dangled it lightly. "Do you carry something of Travis' around or am I just mentally ill or something..." Shell adds with a faint laugh at herself.

"Don't really know if that's an either-or sort of question," I shrug, slipping a hand into my pocket where a couple of months ago I started keeping an old house key to a house that I've never even been to. "I suppose there's a pretty good chance that we both are."
|
|

"Well then maybe we should be mentally ill friends together?" she says teasingly before letting another smile grace her lips. "Do you consider us friends?"

I frown slightly at that, thinking it over. "Yes, I suppose. Not very close, maybe, but friends."

She nods slightly before biting her lip for a moment. "Do you think it's because I was friends with your brother and you two didn't really get along all that much in school?" she asks.

I laugh very slightly, mostly at the fact that 'didn't really get along' is kind of putting it mildly. But then I shake my head after giving it some thought. "No... that's not it. I mean, it was at first. Hell, there were lots of reasons I wanted little to do with you at first." I shrug slightly, eying the ceiling as I list them off. "Older, teacher sort of person with whom you can't let down your guard... somebody crazy enough to think that Fitzy's decent... the 'other woman' who made Maddie so upset... hm. And Riley never liked you all that much, either. But... I don't know. Maybe some of those still apply, but not really. I just don't like getting close to people once I've got an established group of friends. Basically, I... didn't need you, so we've just never gotten close." I shrug again, not at all sure if that came out the way I intended or how badly it could possibly be taken.
