Arden twitched at the touch of his hand and he moved his hand away a moment later. He didn't want to bother her. There was a chance it just surprised her, but just in case he thought it would be good to not leave it there.
He smiled at her chuckle and glanced down at the floor for a moment. He moved to stand next her while he waited for his water to boil. "So instead of avoiding me," Riley started with a smile, "you should just not leave me alone." He didn't mind chasing after her but he would much rather just be around her.

"What, like switch around the roles?" I laugh again. "No... I don't know if you can be this neurotic. I'd rather you weren't, really."

Riley laughed, grinning lightly over to her, "I'm not sure that would go very well." He sure couldn't imagine avoiding her (or many people anyway). "Instead can we skip the avoidance all together?" He nudged her playfully with his shoulder.

"Well, hopefully." I smile again, feel it start to slide from my face, and try my best to look wry instead of sad. "You know me and optimism. If I say something positive I'll jinx it, and then where'll we be?"

"Then we'll just have to knock on a lot of wood," Riley said with a small laugh, knocking on the counter behind him. "I think we're going to be okay." He smiled and glanced over to her. He really did believe that.

I shake my head but at least manage to smile again. "I think my superstitions are a bit more subtle than yours. Lots of careful wordplay and dancing 'round the Universe to try not to step on it's toes." I shake my head again, suspecting that was probably hard to follow but not caring enough to explain it any better. "But that's what I keep you around for, I suppose."

Riley smiled, "Eh, I like to keep things simple," he said in reply even though he kind of thought he always ended up making things more complicated than they should be. "That sounds like you're going to drive yourself crazy though. With all of that over thinking." If that was what she meant- sometimes it was hard to figure out how she thought.

"Thank you for the warning, but I think I did already." I smile faintly, shaking my head. "Hell, maybe that's where all my memories went. My head got too full of all the 'should I, shouldn't I' 'what if' nonsense and it just imploded."

Riley smiled and shook his head a little in amusement. He didn't want to laugh because the subject was kind of a serious one but hey, who knows, right? The fact that her lost all her memories was still a mystery. "Maybe you're better off with the new memories?" Riley offered, looking over to her.

My smile falters as I consider it, then nod. "Maybe so," I say finally, taking a deep breath - then shaking my head and smiling again. "But never mind."

So, Riley didn't know whether her new memories were better than her old ones. He thought it would be a better way to think about it though. Maybe she forgot it all for a reason. "Sorry, not really my place," he smiled faintly over to her before pouring hot water into his mug for his tea. "Would you like any?" He asked a moment later.

I'm so taken aback by the first thing he's said that the second takes a moment to filter through - at which point I start to shake my head, realize that I was just thinking a minute ago how I'd like something to do with my hands, and change course. "Oh - yes, please. Thank you." I frown faintly, trying to determine how to address that last comment without being weird and awkward. Out of context it seems a stupid thing to be upset about, but the implication bothers me.

She frowned some after she accepted the offer of some tea and Riley didn't really understand why. Had he said something? He hadn't said much so it left him kind of puzzled and almost a bit hesitant to ask if she was okay. He fixed up her tea with a small nod and handed her a mug, staying next to her after doing so. "Everything okay?" He went ahead and asked anyway.

I take the mug and shake my head on autopilot, still frowning. "No - yes. It's stupid. I just don't like the idea that - I mean, of course it's 'your place.' I should think that we're close enough that you don't have to apologize for asking things." I shake my head again and bite my lip, then take a gulp of tea. "I don't know, maybe it's silly to be so upset, but that bothered me."

Riley felt sort of relieved that that was why she seemed upset. "I didn't mean to upset you, I promise." He smiled faintly for a moment towards her. "I only really said it," he started to admit, "because I didn't want to upset you." It was actually sort of funny it worked out that way.
"I don't want to mess this up," Riley added a moment later unsure if he should have said that or not.

I grin briefly, at the irony, and shake my head again. "It's okay," I say without thinking, then shrug. "I'm the one that messes things up."

He relaxed a little at her grin and smiled dome too. It seemed that something he said was amusing but he really wasn't sure what until she spoke again. "Maybe it's a joint effort." He couldn't imagine it all just being hers.

I start shaking my head before he's finished speaking. "No, it's usually me." As I finish the sentence I realize it might sound a little too... self-blaming, so I try to soften it with a smile. "I have a knack for destroying things that are good."
