i'm finding it's not easy to be perfect.
eye colour; Dark brown
hair colour; Dark brown
height; 6'2"
other physical traits; As well as being tall, he's also very slender and doesn't look like much strength wise, although he's perfectly capable of holding his own in any physically trying situation. He has many scars, most of which are on his arms from his many years of self-harm, but he has various others inflicted from fights and other confrontations, the most noticable of which are the curse scar over his heart from an encounter with death, a faded jagged scar across his throat from another attempt on his life, and perhaps the one he's most self-conscious about; a curved scar on his cheek that won't fade and he refuses to discuss the origins of, and will only admit that it was inflicted a few years ago during the time he spent away from his family.
clothing style; Despite the fact that he has very little to be self-conscious about, seeing as he's physically fit and not particularly unattractive, he doesn't see this and much prefers to cover up as much as he can whilst simultaneously not standing out. He tends to wear jeans and loose plain shirts or long sleeved t-shirts. It's very rare for him to wear anything with short sleeves, even in the summer, because he likes to cover up all of his scars.
what i really meant to say[/font][/blockquote]
is that i'm sorry for the way i am.
good traits;
Being fiercely loyal and braver than your average snake, and taking into account that during his adolescence he fitted the self-serving and cunning nature of his house well, the man he's grown into is quite the opposite. Nowadays, he's very selfless and will put most anyone before himself and his own wellbeing, as he's demonstrated on a few occasions, the most prominent of which in his mind at least, was when he laid down his life and consequently spent two rather unpleasant weeks dead. He's very protective of his friends and family, and takes their safety and happiness very seriously, willing to do anything at the drop of a hat to assure this. He's also intelligent, even if he dumbs himself down a lot, and even though he's let most of this go to waste, he can outsmart a fair few people if he bothered to apply himself. His sense of humour is dry and sarcasm is something that has stuck with him no matter what phase in his life he's gone through, which can be a good trait or a bad one, depending on your perspective. He'll often try to do the right thing, but he rarely follows through because he either gets distracted by an easier way out or just decides that it's no longer important and drops the situation he's supposed to be handling entirely. Being very stubborn, he'll keep fighting if he knows he's in the right and refuses to back down on matters of importance, but he's not hotheaded and doesn't pick fights just for the hell of it. When he stops being so wound up, he's a very kind and easy-going person to get along with, it's just not many people that see that side of him.
flaws;
One of his biggest flaws is that it's just geniunely not many people that see that side of him. He much prefers to put up a front and be labelled an asshole, because then he lets less people down. He's constantly letting people down, in his mind at least, and hates the idea of it. His low self-esteem is almost crippling and because of his past experiences, he believes that he sees himself for what he is much clearer than anyone else, so naturally he'll disagree with anyone claiming him to be decent. He can shift the blame from every negative thing that happens in his or anyone that he cares about's life onto his shoulders. He has a serious lack of ambition and direction in his life and can't really see a point in his life when everything might change because he's pretty content with the way things are going for him at the moment, and even if he isn't, he dreads the idea that they could be worse and he'd have to adapt again. He's very uptight and it's rare for him to completely loosen up around anyone, even the people closest to him. Much as his intelligence means that he has a fairly good grasp on how things work, wizard and muggle alike, he doesn't really understand people and human relationships and thus his friends and family constantly surprise and confuse him. He's a very good liar, which probably isn't a very good thing to be, and usually introverted. Tactless and somewhat pathetic with some people when he genuinely is trying, he can also be cold and distant with others as he persistently keeps up his front. He's prone to extreme stress and depression, and is anxious about everything and more often than anyone should be; suicidal.
His largest and worst flaw is that he's very sick pyschologically. He's suffered from Disassociative Identity Disorder since he was a teenager, and therefore will occasionally (more often when he's upset or worried about something) lash out. At these times when his alter-ego takes control, it's better for all concerned to just stay away from him because he's very unstable and will often turn violent or in more serious cases completely psychotic. The condition is a remnant of his old life that won't shift.
habits;
He's almost a compulsive liar and often lies without thinking about it, but this is usually only with things that worry him. If he's been somewhere that he shouldn't and knows that he shouldn't, for instance, he'll automatically lie about it without having to think it through first.
He's smoked since he was fourteen, and much as he started quitting when he was eighteen, he still hasn't quite managed overa decade down the line. He doesn't smoke as often, but he still does and just doesn't really mention it even if it's probably obvious.
He's prone to extreme bouts of depression, and can be suicidal at these times. He used to attempt suicide on a regular basis, although he hasn't now in what feels like a very long time. He's a former self-harmer and now that he's older he detests that fact and refuses to even acknowledge what was once a crucial part of him. This circle of self-loathing often leads to more self-harm, for which he hates himself even more, and consequently does it again. So although he does think of himself as a former self-harmer, he's still pretty regular at it, even if he doesn't entirely understand why he still does it. He both cuts and burns during these spells.
He also panics occasionally, and when he does it usually involves him doing something very stupid like drinking a dangerous amount or infidelity or both. He's managed to stay faithful for a very long time, as usually one night stands don't bear well for him as he seems to have particularly high fertility.

brief history;
After his real father faked his own suicide two days before his birth at the threat of Dark Wizards, and his mother hung herself a month later, he didn't have the best of starts in life. His siblings were taken away, and he was seperated from them, ending up in an orphanage in London. When he was six years old he was adopted by a wealthy pure blood family who lied about his blood status.
There he was raised alongside his adopted brother, with a firm disciplinarian approach and was both physically and verbally assaulted regularly. Just like all of the other children in the family, he was worn down. Both of his female cousins died before they could reach adulthood, via familial elimination and suicide. Him, his brother, and his cousin all signed up with the Dark Lord, just like their fathers before them and threw themselves into the occupation after deciding that it was a very satisfying outlet for the pent up frustration that had built up throughout their childhood. Ian was the first of them to make a kill, alongside his best friend and another Death Eater with a similar upbringing, Logan. It was a simple matter of revenge that was taken too far, and whereas Logan didn't seem too bothered by the accidental first murder to their names, Ian was much less calm about the whole thing. It resulted in his first suicide attempt and he spent many months in hospital, which is why he hates the places so much now, and neglected to speak for the whole time. The first word to break the silence was 'goodbye' directed to his younger brother, right before he packed up and left home at the age of fifteen.
He spent a lonely but peaceful few months by himself, before his brother and childhood friends caught up with them. After much, and mostly violent, negotiation, they decided to travel on together as none of them much liked the idea of going home to their families and resumed Death Eater work.
He fell in love for the first time that same year, with a muggle born girl who'd caught his eye in one of the small towns they stopped in. He managed to successfully keep the ensuing relationship from his friends for about a month, before Rowan promptly found out and couldn't keep the news to himself. They all took a particular interest in it from then on, and although he remained oblivious until years later, they started to pay her visits and set her out as a target to expend torture on. Just before he turned sixteen, Erin fell pregnant, and although he was terrified, he decided it was now even more important that he stuck by her. Before the baby was born, Erin ran away, and he was lead to believe that she was dead.
Although this was all some sadistic joke to his friends, it pretty much backfired on them, because it was around this time that he lost his passion for being a Death Eater. He started to try and talk the others round to his new way of thinking, attempting to convince them that they should either part ways or carry on with some other course of action. After his persuasion succeeded on Logan's twin brother, Will, and Will left the group in the middle of the night to pursue his luck elsewhere, the others decided that this was going to be a problem. He'd already started on trying to convince his brother, when it was made clear to him that he had to stop with this or there was going to be a lot of trouble for him. He made sure to be much more subtle from that point on. That was, until he reached breaking point. Casting the killing curse on his best friend is something that's always haunted him, even if it failed, but he thought that it had to be done and that if Logan was dead and he was gone, the others would be leaderless and would disperse of their own accord. Rowan escaped, after swearing that he would kill his brother the next time they met. Both Michael and Liam were arrested and locked up in Azkaban, where Michael subsequently died and Liam was eventually released after grassing up other Death Eaters. And assuming that Logan was dead, Ian moved on alone.
It was then that he met Madeline Speare. He hated her at first, because she challenged him and his way of life and he didn't like that at all, but mostly because she was a self-righteous Gryffindor and highly irritating. And then - he still sometimes thinks of this as a bad move, depending on the situation between them which is often volatile - he accidentally fell in love with her. Since that point, they'd been engaged twice but never married, and had two children together that have survived, Alex and Abby, but Poppy (who's lived with them on a permanent basis since she was three) might as well be biological to both of them as well. He's also the father of two children outside of this relationship, due to a one night stand with one of his best friends, and never saw the twins, Sam and Vi as often as he should. When Sam died in infancy, he looked after Vi for the ensuing few months while her mother was in hiding, and then began to see her much more regularly when she was back with her family again.
He's also in regular contact with his biological family. His older brother died, regrettably, just after they'd met face to face. His sister and his nephew live nearby and he sees them on a regular basis. And much as he was horrified when his father met, fell in love with, and then married Meredith Prophet (who's former husband had worked for his adopted parents so he knew from childhood), he's gradually accepted this development. Even if he was even more horrifed when his father decided that he apparently wasn't too old to have more children and had another son.
Many years after the downfall of the Dark Lord, when his son was seven and before he was even aware that he was going to have another daughter, he suffered the displeasure of having to reiniate contact with Logan. Logan was worried that the ministry were rounding up more Death Eaters for Azkaban and that their names had been given by someone already in the prison, and after a few days allowing this worry to grate on him, Ian decided that it was entirely feasible and if that was the case then he couldn't stay around if he was going to go to Azkaban.
He and Logan left pretty soon afterwards, Ian leaving behind his family, and Logan leaving his son to stay with his sister so that they could escape before they even got caught.
They spent two unpleasant years on the run together, until Ian ran into an old friend who after the initial brief and blunt confrontation involving his cowardly decision to run off, informed him that he had a new daughter.
Seeing this as a clear reason to return home, Ian left Logan to carry on being a coward on his own and returned to his family. After the first response of having to get rid of Liam, who'd moved in on his girlfriend in his absence, having to deal with his son now despising him, and not to mention sleeping on the couch for a very long time, life returned to normal.
Or normal-ish. Alex still doesn't trust him and refuses to talk directly to him and now stubbornly refers to him by his first name, but besides that, everything is much better than it ever has been.
